I feel that this is a successful image because there are many focus points for a viewer to look at. However it also draws a viewers eye to one particular point. I believe that is the girl on the right holding the books. This composition of this image clearly shows movement and can be easily identified as a walk on by image. |
It's not the street,Its the life on the street or where the street takes you thats important! -Bruce Davidson

what is going on in the image? This image portrays a juxtaposition. On one hand the white gentleman seems tense and outraged. His facial expressions gives me the impression that he has a highly stereotypical view of the man standing next to him. Why could this be? one reason could be that the black gentleman is holding the lead of a dog that could be said to be dangerous. Another reason could be that the black gentleman is casually clothed compared to the suit wearing white gentleman. The white gentleman's disdained facial look could highlight a lack of respect for the black gentleman's colour. On the other hand. The black gentleman's expression is one of happiness, as seen by the smile on his face. This could be just a simple reaction to being happy but it could also be a declaration of pride in the person he is, and him showing that he doesn't care what anyone else thinks of him. Is the image in black and white or colour - what difference does this make? Having the image in black and white would obscure the facial expressions of the white gentleman and the close details of the surroundings in the image. But a black and white image could also portray the past and past feelings and opinions of those who didn't like people of colour. I feel that the image is better in colour because it allows the viewer to focus on the surroundings. This could be hard to do if it was in black and white Describe the composition of the image - is it calm, still and clearly organised or is it full of action/violence/movement and a little bit chaotic? I believe that the composition has been clearly organised. The position of the subjects and the facial expression of the subjects seem to be placed purposely to be the opposite of each other. For example. Black / White Guy, Not happy/ Happy Guy, Dark clothes on white guy/ light clothes on black guy. The image at first glance could be said to be calm and still, however the presence of the dog could indicate that at any moment the composition could change to become full of action, violence and movement, if any of the gentleman were to upset the dog. |
Homework
For this assignment I was required to pick one photograph from my 'street Photography' selection and evaluate it. With that in mind, I chose the above image. Why? I like how the image shows different dimensions. To begin with, even though this image is primarily used under the title of street photography, this image could also relate to abstraction, due to the depth of field technique.
In addition, I believe that the way I took the image has produced an illusion of being taken at a slight angle, thus creating a sloping effect, where by the object at the front of the image seems to be on a slightly lower level than the objects at the back.
I feel that the image creates mystery, because in most photographs you see some sort of facial imagery. The lack of it prompts the viewer to come to their own conclusions as to why this is not the case.
On focusing on what I could have done better, I feel that editing of the lighting would have created a more dramatic effect by focusing the spotlight on the two female student s at the back.
In conclusion, I believe this task has encouraged me to be more experimental with an image. Changing different elements in order to get the best out of an image.
